Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Social Security Administration (SSA)<\/a> and Veterans Association (VA) typically work independently of one another, so long as you\u2019re a veteran, unable to work, and able to meet the outlined criteria for both benefits programs, you\u2019re good to go!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s The Difference Between The Two? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>SSA<\/strong> is responsible for offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a> benefits to all disabled workers who are unable to maintain employment as a result of documented medical conditions or terminal illnesses.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>VA<\/strong> is responsible for offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a> benefits exclusively to military service members who are disabled as a direct result of their active duty military service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Is Eligibility Determined? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>SSA<\/strong> will investigate a person\u2019s entire medical history, and combines all of their medical issues together to determine if they qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a> benefits. This includes any and all medical problems suffered before, during, or after any military service.<\/li>\n<li>Contrarily, the <strong>VA<\/strong> will only acknowledge injures or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disabilities<\/a> sustained during the course of a person\u2019s active duty military service. Any conditions or illnesses suffered before or after service cannot be counted toward VA benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Is Disability Determined? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In order to obtain <strong>SSA<\/strong> benefits, you must be able prove that you\u2019re completely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disabled<\/a>. You will have to verify you\u2019re not able to work at all for at least one whole year, or that you suffer from a terminal illness.<\/li>\n<li>In order to obtain <strong>VA<\/strong> benefits, you must first be investigated and given a \u201cdisability rating.\u201d This number, between 0 and 100, determines how disabled you are, with 0 meaning not at all and 100 meaning totally disabled. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a> rating determines how much in benefits you qualify for. The higher your rating, the more assistance you\u2019ll receive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Special Considerations <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No matter which type of benefits you\u2019re pursuing, you will need to offer up undeniable medical evidence of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a>. This can be done easily by providing official medical records and forms documenting your long-term health.<\/li>\n<li>If you already receive <strong>VA<\/strong> benefits and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiellolawgroup.com\/practice-areas\/social-security-disability\">disability<\/a> rating is 70% or higher, you will have a much easier time applying for <strong>SSA<\/strong> benefits.
